It's amazing what Americans will throw away...I found these fine volumes, in excellent condition, at places such as Goodwill, a store for secondhand hand-me-downs(yes, I repeat, secondhand hand-me-downs) and next to a trashcan...

Hey Puneet!
That's the beauty of America. People are pretty creative about recycling, and there are lots of asses who like having only the latest thing. It's entirely possible to furnish one's entire house from "dumpster diving," which I did indeed do for the entirety of my college experience. There are many, many, many online services (Freecycle, CL, book swap sites) that cater to facilitating the transfer of trash to treasure. For example, I think in NY, there's a Google Maps enmeshed with a recycling listserv so you can see exactly where people have left couches, TVs, etc., outside for the taking. I always find it shockingly different in India; when I brag about wearing cheap secondhand clothes, my co-workers' eyes just about pop out of their heads.
